What do honey butter chips taste like?

The very first time I had these chips were a couple years ago when I visited a Korean bar in Vancouver. They had a platter consisting of everything honey butter: potato chips, fried chicken, fries, and rice cakes. I fell in love almost instantly.

If you’re a fan of sweet and salty combinations, then this one’s for you. The honey and salt compliment each other perfectly, while the richness of the butter tie all of those flavors together.

That honey butter sauce ultimately coats the potato chips as a glaze, giving it a beautiful shine.

The benefits of making this homemade means that you can totally adjust the flavors as you see fit to your preference. The sauce only consists of 3 ingredients, so play around with the ratios until you find your sweet spot.

Ingredients

•1 russet potato, peeled and cut into ~1/16” thick slices
•1/4 cup vinegar
•~3 cups water, just enough to submerge the potatoes

Sauce:
•1/4 cup unsalted butter
•2-3 tbsp honey
•1/4 tsp salt, more or less to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the sliced potatoes under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

2. Stir together the vinegar and water until combined. Pour this onto the potatoes and let the potatoes soak in the vinegar liquid for 45 mins.

3. Once soaked, pat the potatoes dry. Deep fry it in oil for about 5 mins or until golden and crispy.

4. In a separate pot, melt together the butter, honey, and salt. Let this cook for ~2 mins to allow the sauce to thicken and become stickier.

5. Toss in the fried potato chips and stir to evenly coat with the honey butter sauce.

6. Top with parsley and serve immediately.

Can I cheat making honey butter chips?

As much as I love making everything from scratch, I’ll be completely honest, there is an easier way to do this.

If you’re in a pinch, and just want honey butter chips now, then by all means you can simply buy yourself some plain potato chips from the store and just toss it in the sauce!

Note that most potato chips already come pre-salted, so adjust the salt of the sauce accordingly (or not even include it at all).
