This recipe was inspired by the traditional Chinese liangban cold tofu which only requires a block of tofu and an easy flavorful sauce. It’s a no-cook recipe, which is as easy as it gets and refreshing enough for the upcoming warm weather!
Jump to Recipe Print RecipeI’m a huge fan of tofu for its versatility. You can throw it in soups, in stir fries, deep fry it, use it as a dessert, and even eat it cold without any cooking involved.
I find tofu pretty tasty as it is, but coupled with a rich sauce that’s spicy and packed with umami, it becomes even more irresistible.
You can serve the cold tofu as a side dish or an appetizer; but if you’re like me, grab yourself a bowl of warm rice and make it a whole meal. This was what my childhood friend’s Chinese grandma would always feed me whenever I would go over to their house back then…And to this day, I still think about how sweet she was whenever I would make myself this cold tofu bowl!
Ingredients
•1 package soft or silken tofu
•3 garlic cloves, minced
•1/2 tsp sesame seeds
•1/2 tsp sugar
•1 thai chilli pepper, chopped
•1 tbsp cilantro, chopped
•1 tbsp soy sauce
•1 tbsp oyster sauce
•1 tbsp sesame oil
•1/2 tbsp black vinegar
•1/2 tbsp water
Instructions
- Mix together all the ingredients for the sauce until smooth.
- Spoon the sauce over the block of tofu and serve.
- Garnish with green onions and/or red peppers if desired.
As with all recipes, feel free to adjust the sauce as you see fit to your tastes. The sauce will taste slightly strong on its own, but that’s because the cold tofu is meant to balance out those flavors in the end.
You can also choose to slice the tofu into smaller sections or cubes to make it easier to handle during eating!
